How does Kybella work?

Kybella (previously called ATX-101) is an in office injectable treatment for reducing submental fat, affectionately referred to as the “double chin.” The injection contains a naturally occurring bile salt that slowly breaks down fat, which is then reabsorbed by your body. When injected properly, all other cells are left healthy and intact. Dr. Stephen Weber is a double board-certified Facial Plastic Surgeon who performs minimally invasive Kybella in Denver and Lone Tree, CO.

Historically, the recommended treatment approach has been to shrink fat cells using diet and exercise. While this approach is sometimes effective, results are never long-lasting. When a normal diet and lifestyle are resumed, fat cells return to normal. Kybella is a drug that offers patients an alternative treatment solution. Synthetic deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient found in Kybella. In its natural state, deoxycholic acid plays an important role in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. In its synthetic state, deoxycholic acid destroys targeted groups of fat cells. Once fat cells are destroyed, they cannot return. Results seen after a Kybella procedure are long-lasting and sustainable.

This revolutionary concept has lead to countless patients finding a solution to a problem they once thought could not be solved.

Review - Kybella

What are the details of the procedure?

Kybella is administered as an outpatient procedure in an office setting. Once the patient is relaxed and comfortable, their skin is cleaned and prepped using special solutions.

Total procedure time is usually between 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. In order for Kybella to produce maximum results, a series of treatments need to be carried out. Treatments are spaced out at 1-month intervals. The procedure is then carried out through the following steps:

  • A topical numbing agent is applied to the skin so the patient does not feel any pain or discomfort
  • Dr. Weber gently guides a tiny needle into problematic areas and injects Kybella
  • Injections are completed within 1-2 minutes
  • Ice is then applied to the area to ease discomfort

Most patients will see results after their second or third treatment. The maximum amount of treatments a patient can have is six.

Kybella FAQs

Why do diet and exercise help me lose body fat but not my double chin?

Fat is made up of fat cells. The number of fat cells a person has cannot be changed, but the size of the cells can. For large areas such as the stomach, buttocks, and waist, diet and exercise can decrease the size of many fat cells and a significant improvement in a person’s figure can be seen. For small areas such as the chin, it is much harder to decrease cell size enough to show visible signs of fat loss.

Do genetics play a role in the appearance of a double chin?

Genetics absolutely play a role in the appearance of a double chin. Many people who have a double chin are thin and in great shape. It makes sense that the only reason they have a double chin is because it is something that was inherited from their parents.

How does Kybella work?

Kybella works by destroying stubborn fat cells under the chin. There are no other injectable treatment options that are able to do this.

How do I know how many treatments I will need?

The definitive way to know how many treatments you will need is to arrange and attend an initial consultation with Dr. Weber. Once your condition is evaluated and Dr. Weber has a clear understanding of your aesthetic goals, he will let you know how many treatments you will need.

Are Kybella and BOTOX the same thing?

Kybella and BOTOX are not the same thing. BOTOX is a medication that temporarily weakens facial muscles to reduce dynamic wrinkles like crow’s feet and frown lines. BOTOX may be used in many different parts of the face. Kybella is a medication that is only used to destroy fat cells under the chin.

How can I maximize my results?

The best thing you can do to maximize your results is to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle after treatment. Regularly exercising and eating a well-balanced diet will ensure you look and feel great.

Are results really long-lasting?

Results seen after Kybella treatments are long-lasting. This is one of the reasons why Kybella is very popular. It should be noted that the fat cells remaining after Kybella treatments can enlarge if a person gains weight. Thus, it is critical to practice a healthy lifestyle to maintain your results.

Are there risks associated with Kybella?

Like all medications and minimally invasive surgical procedures, there are risks associated with Kybella treatments. Dr. Weber takes great care to minimize all risks. Before your procedure, he will go over all the risks and carefully describe the measures he takes to reduce them. In nearly all cases, patients find that the benefits of Kybella treatments drastically outweigh the risks.

Can I see before and after photos of patients who have undergone Kybella treatments?

Dr. Weber has a large collection of before and after photos that he would love to show you. He will choose patients whose facial features closely resemble yours so you can know exactly what type of results to expect following your treatments. You are also welcome to bring in your own photos that reflect your artistic tastes and aesthetic sensibilities. This can help Dr. Weber to personalize your results even further.

Who manufactures Kybella?

Kybella is manufactured by the popular and well-known company Allergan. Other popular medications manufactured by Allergan include BOTOX, Juvederm, Vollure, Volbella and Voluma.

Has Dr. Weber been trained to administer Kybella?

Dr. Weber has been trained to administer Kybella and all other Allergan injectable products. He is also a National Physician Trainer for Allergan. He has trained numerous injectors in Colorado, Florida, Michigan, and Oklahoma.

Is it important to have Kybella administered by a Facial Plastic Surgeon?

A board-certified Facial Plastic Surgeon is undoubtedly the most qualified medical professional to administer Kybella. The knowledge, skills, and experience of a Facial Plastic Surgeon are unprecedented and when put to use help ensure a safe and effective treatment.

How do I know if I am a candidate?

You may be a candidate if you are healthy and over the age of eighteen. You may not undergo treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have a bleeding disorder, you will need to discuss your condition with Dr. Weber before undergoing treatment. Of course, the ultimate decision regarding your candidacy is made after your initial consultation.

What should I bring to my initial consultation?

Dr. Weber asks that you bring a list of all the medications and herbal supplements you are taking to your initial consultation. If you would like to bring a list of questions and/or pictures for Dr. Weber to review, you are encouraged to do so.

Are there any alternatives to Kybella?

Yes. SculpSure is a LASER device that targets stubborn collections of fat. This device can be used to address the double chin area as well. Submental fat can also be reduced during a liposuction procedure or with a surgical neck lift, which may be a good option for patients suffering from a higher degree of submental fat. During your consultation, Dr. Weber will perform a full exam and make his recommendations on that basis, ensuring you have all necessary information before you make a decision.
